Dr. Paloma Gonzalez-Rojas, co-founder and CEO of Atacama Biomaterials, is a distinguished entrepreneur and material scientist with deep expertise in machine learning. Earning her Ph.D. from MIT, she pioneered AI applications in materials science to commercialize sustainable products. At Atacama, an MIT spinout, she leads the development of innovative, cost-effective alternatives to traditional plastics using locally sourced raw materials. Utilizing just 11% of the energy typically required and powered by green energy and advanced robotics, Atacama is setting new industry standards. The company's efforts are poised to significantly reduce the reliance on single-use packaging by making sustainable options more affordable and reducing CO2 emissions by two gigatons by 2035. Under her leadership, Atacama has developed WPk, a recycled-paper-based composite that matches the cost and exceeds the performance of conventional materials in strength, durability, and lightness.
