Millennium Fellowship Project: Itójú ara sájú oyún
"Ìtójú ara sájú oyún". A yoruba phrase that translates to mean "proper care should be done before pregnancy". It is a non- governmental initiative that aims to establish preconceptional care as a main stay of health strategy. It is not only restricted to women aspiring to be mothers, but also for men hoping to prevent negative and avoidable outcomes regarding their reproductive future.
International attention to preconception care interventions dates back to 1980 when the inaugural Healthy People initiative included a focus on the reduction of unintended pregnancies. The health objectives set forth in this initiative were designed to address the disparities in unintended pregnancy rates and these disparities were often associated with maternal risk factors such as poor lifestyle habits, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other genetically inherited diseases .
Because infant mortality is a reflection of a nation's overall health, this initiative is targeted at reducing risk factors for poor outcomes through focus group outreaches and social media publications to bring about awareness to low income communities.
