" As a Millennium Fellow, I will refine my skills in the art of creating connections in the field of social justice in order to build communities focused on changing our society. During the Fellowship, I look forward to collaborating with my peers and other leaders to create the world in which we want to live. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Babes 4 Babes
My project, Babes 4 Babes, is built on Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty) and 5 (Gender Equality). The project specifically focuses on the empowerment of unhoused and sheltered women and non-binary people across New York City, an area with one of the highest populations of homeless people in the country. According to a survey of homeless shelters conducted by the Huffington Post, the most commonly requested items by unhoused women include bras and menstruation products. Therefore, to empower these women, the main goal of Babes 4 Babes involves building relationships with shelters and homeless agencies in the city to provide access to menstrual care products and bras to the people who need them the most.
About the Millennium Fellow
Jenn Beardsley is a senior studying biology and public health at Columbia University in New York City, USA. With a background in healthcare and anti-poverty advocacy, Jenn is dedicated to improving the health of unhoused and sheltered individuals across NYC. Her project, centered at the intersection between anti-poverty justice and the fight for women’s rights, aims to provide unhoused women and women living in shelters with access to menstruation products, with a particular focus on women who survived domestic violence. Inspired by over a decade of work with NGOs serving unhoused communities, Jenn hopes to create a new world in which all women can access these basic necessities, no matter their socioeconomic status. In her spare time, Jenn researches cardiovascular disease, plays the electric guitar, and resides as a member of her university’s Students of Color Advisory Board.
