Columbia University | New York, United States | Advancing SDG 5 & UNAI 3
" “I’m delighted to be a Millennium Fellow to be able to work with equally passionate students who also believe that social impact work can be effective at any level, at any time. I feel strongly that the support of my coaches, teachers, and friends when I was younger led me to the success I’ve had today, and I cannot wait to create a space for other female athletes to access peers, mentorship, and guidance so they may share in similar successes. Through this Fellowship, I’ll develop the skills to make my social impact project as effective as possible and align it with the UNAI principles and SDGs.” "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Healthy Relationship Training for Columbia Athletics Community
My social impact millennium fellowship project is focused on the United Nations Academic Impact Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 – quality education, 5 – gender equality, and 16 – peace, justice, and strong solutions. In order to achieve all three goals, my project is to bring a One Love event to my Columbia Athletics community and get more male athletes trained to partake. One Love is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating students about dating violence and domestic partner abuse in order to help students out of and avoid less than ideal relationships. It was founded after a female University of Virginia lacrosse student athlete was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, so it’s pretty closely tied to the northeastern athletics community.
About the Millennium Fellow
Kathryn Ann Ryan is a junior at Columbia University, studying English Literature. She feels that her early involvement in sports led to her high caliber of both academic and athletic success. Kathryn is a division one ivy league athlete and is also a dean’s list student as well as a student scholar in the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies. Through her project, Kathryn is excited to create a foundational program for young women to connect, improve their body image, encourage each other, and receive mentorship from older athletes.
