Millennium Fellowship Project: Bioquette
Many households in Nigeria live below the poverty line and depend on cheap source of fuels such as firewood to cook which are toxic and hazardous to human health and the environment. The high rate of cleaner energy source such as the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) contributed to this unending menace. Although these alternative fuels are inexpensive, they not only destroy our forest habitat as more pressure is being applied to illegal and unsustainable source of woods, they also contribute to the introduction of green house gases such as carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. They contribute to deforestation and are substantial sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Heart disease, strokes, cancer, pneumonia, and a variety of other health problems are among the consequences.
According to the Vanguard, June 22, 2021, over 900,000 people in Nigeria were reported using unclean fuel because of how affordable they are.
My project is about providing a source of clean and affordable cooking fuel to the people of Nigeria; Ibadan community.
I am interested in training 300 women and young people on briquettes production; which are clean and economical fuel made from agricultural waste, sawdust, and yard waste and many more. Also, how they can make business ideas can be developed from it while also creating more awareness on the use of safe and affordable source of fuel.
About the Millennium Fellow
Patricia Shomide is an energetic, creative and innovative individual who constantly imbibes diligence to achieve set goals. She is a final year Forestry Student at University of Ibadan. She is a native of Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Patricia is so passionate about advocating for Sustainable management. She believes in making her environment safe and free of hazardous substances. While at this, she has garnered experiences in the field of climate action through her active signing up for volunteering and internships. Aside from Volunteering, She is a GIS and Remote Sensing enthusiast. She enjoys singing, reading, watching movies and interacting with people. She is working towards becoming an expert in Forestry and Sustainability.
