Millennium Fellowship Project: H-First

● Challenge - DISEASE BURDEN ON HEALTH SYSTEM OF PAKISTAN

According to statistics, Pakistan is facing a lot of burden on healthcare system due to communicable as well as non-communicable diseases. This effect was particularly highlighted when the pandemic arose, demanding attention to be given to the system of healthcare.

● Impact- why is DISEASE BURDEN a CHALLENGE

❖ ECONOMIC IMPACT

▪ - the cumulative health expenditure by federal and provincial govt went up by

14.35 % from 421.78b last year 2019-2020 to 482.27 billion in 2021-2022 ▪ Budget getting inflated at high level.

▪ Clear indication of deterioration of health system if preventive steps not taken in time.

❖ SOCIAL IMPACT

▪ Mental stress

▪ People keeping the diseased aloof

▪ Patients unable to fulfill their roles as member of society and as a member of family

▪ Overall hierarchy of society getting disturbed

● Major diseases creating burden

❖ cancer 8%

❖ CVD 8%,

❖ tuberculosis 5%,

❖ diabetes 3%,

❖ hepatitis 7.6%

● OUR PROJECT – EMPHASIS ON NCDs (NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES)

● WHY NCDs - significant contribution

❖ Responsible for 58% deaths according to 2020 data

❖ 85% of disease burden on the country 2019 data ❖ Includes

▪ cancer,

▪ diabetes,

▪ COPD (10% includes emphysema and bronchitis)

WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM OUR PLAN?

We expect that imparting the knowledge to people, who normally have no idea about it, or those who usually ignore it, will help to lessen the disease burden and spread on disease in the first place. The health and lifestyle of people will improve and this will eventually lead to a better society

About the Millennium Fellow

Uswa Ashraf is a young, diligent and hardworking medical student at King Edward Medical University. She was born in pakistan; Has Spent almost 18yrs in kuwait and eventually returned to her homeland for higher education (current residence). She has always remained consistent with being the topper throughout her school and college life. Her dedication towards her education has led her to where she is now, on the road of becoming a Doctor. She believes that Hardships often lead ordinary people to extraordinary destiny! She also possess keen interest in sports and research. She has always been impassioned about supporting and helping the people in need and wants to produce a positive social impact through her academic knowledge that would benefit not only her community but also contribute to the overall development of her country. Nothing makes her more happy than seeing people of her country flourish. Her motto in life "Always Stay Happy And Healthy."
