Mbarara University of Science and Technology | Mbarara, Uganda | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 2
" It's with greatest pleasure to be shortlisted amongst the very many applicants of the Millennium Fellowship class of 2022. This has come at a point where Biomeds in Uganda lack a voice towards the shaping of social policies and structures to the governance of the health sector in Uganda. This will help improve my leadership experience and skills towards the building of a permanent structure on how the health sector is run in this country. More so I can't live out the core part that this will Link me up to very many people across the world thus improving and building my networks. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: A low cost continuous passive motion device for people in low resource settings
Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) machine is used during the first phase of rehabilitation following soft tissue knee surgery, trauma treatments and other physiotherapeutic applications. It is prescribed to control post-operative pain, reduces inflammation and increases movement in the joint plane. All the benefits, notwithstanding, the use of CPM machines is limited by the cost of the equipment. The current CPM machine goes for over 2000 US Dollars which hinders accessibility for people in low resource settings like Uganda.
About the Millennium Fellow
Atumanya Agabus is a Biomedical engineering student at the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Mbarara University Uganda. I was born in a small town named Rwampara in the greater district of Mbarara, which later turned into a district. From my early childhood I had always dreamt about being a scientist and how to change norm in the health sector. Though not going for Health related courses, thanks to the genesis of biomedical engineering in Uganda, a course that brings together Engineering and Medicine. I am passionate about improving the social and psychological impact of biomeds in the health sector through speeding up innovations and easing works of all Health workers through the refurbishment of modern tech machines for proper efficiency.
