Millennium Fellowship Project: The right to know water quality
I am working on a case statement to petition the United Nations to include the human right-to-know water quality in Sustainability Goal 6. In issuing its declaration on the human right to clean water and sanitation, the UN called on the nations of the world to contribute their resources and brainpower to assure that people will no longer suffer without clean water. It is certainly fair to say that Sustainability Goal 6, which reflects that Declaration, might imply there is also a right-to-know if water is clean. The concept of right-to-know is recognized worldwide for many things, such as ingredients in food and medications. We take that right for granted in our daily lives without asking why it does not apply to water. The reason it doesn't is because internationally, nationally and locally we have not developed policies that will require the necessary technologies, or provide the incentives to develop them. Therefore the innovations that will make them possible are not developed. It should be the mission of all the states of the UN to not only make water clean and accessible, but to assure that every person is able to make informed decisions about their health by having the right to know the quality of their drinking water as they request it.
About the Millennium Fellow
Noëlle Meij is an International Sophomore Undergraduate student majoring in Psychology at Pace University. She is also a committed Division II student-athlete on the Pace Women's Field Hockey Team. Noëlle is passionate about reducing the plastic consumption and recycling the plastic waste. She became more aware of the growing sustainability issues during her high school years. Being a girl that likes to act and put her money where her mouth is, she initiated projects like cleaning up the local woods in her community together with (preschool) students while educating them regarding waste, litter and the demolishing effect when left in nature. It’s her priority to raise more awareness and educate people in her community about how reduce plastic waste.
