Millennium Fellowship Project: Combating the Old Believes in a Bid to Save the New Generation, Targeting the Most Underrated Players
In our community, grandmas travel to help take care of newborns. In so doing, they often apply their old knowledge and practices in the early care of these children. I noticed that the majority of the health information is concentrated on the mother to be when she comes for ante-natal, whereas most of the time, she is usually powerless to influence the decisions made by the grandmas. I want to carry out a research to measure how common the practice is and how it can be targeted to improve maternal and child health.
Combating the old believes in a bid to save the new generation, targeting the most underrated players.
The mother to be has always been the target of health information when it comes to child rearing, this ignores a huge cultural difference in the African setting, which this group of medical student were able to combat with their insight.
About the Millennium Fellow
Abdullahi Muritala is a bright final-year medical student from the University of Ilorin. He was born in a remote part of Kwara State Nigeria where he witnessed health unavailability firsthand. This prompted him to pursue a degree in medicine and surgery, and use said the degree to give back to the community. Since he gained admission into medicine, he has been involved in several outreach programs that aim to make healthcare accessible to all. He is also enthusiastic about research and software development and how they can be used to improve healthcare in Africa.
