" I envision a world where empowering and providing refugee children with the adequate resources to be able to build bright futures for themselves is the norm. I believe that there is much potential in all children and that this potential should never be squandered or gone unnoticed, especially due to war. All children deserve a chance to have their dreams and aspirations come to fruition and I am excited to raise awareness and act in favor of this goal as a Millennium Fellow. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: A Conversation About Global Refugee Education

An educational panel to inform the University of Michigan community and the general public about the varied and important work being done to fight for the education of refugee children and the consequent disparities that refugee children face from a lack of education and access to it. Include a particular emphasis on the world of UNICEF, The United Nations and Sustainable Development Goal #4 (Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all), and UNHCR.

About the Millennium Fellow

Selin Sema Baytan, a rising junior from New York, is an ambitious and driven pre-law student at the University of Michigan pursuing a double major in Political Science and French & Francophone Studies and a minor in Philosophy. For as long as she can remember, Selin has been passionate about advocating for social justice and particularly refugee rights, children's rights, and women's rights. Throughout her high school years and currently in her college years, she has volunteered with Syrian refugees in Istanbul (where her family is from), whether that be in medical clinics or preschools, and has fundraised to provide clothing and baby food for Syrian refugee families. Selin has a passion for refugee affairs, world politics and languages, and international human rights and refugee law. She hopes to combine these passions and pursue a legal career in the future to advocate for those who need it the most.
