UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT EMMANUEL OKONNAYA ONWUBIKO, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2022.
University of Benin | Benin City, Nigeria | Advancing SDG 16 & UNAI 6
" Human Rights advocacy becomes most effective when pioneered by one who has an exceptional leadership quality and experience; and very good interpersonal communication skill. Being a Millennium Fellow gives me the priceless opportunity to learn, unlearn and relearn along these paths. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Operation Know Your Rights
With the wanton disregard for human rights by the government through its agencies such as the police in its various outfits (for example, the defunct special anti robbery squad sars which has now be rebranded as swat after the lekki toll gate massacre of October 20th, 2020); there is no gain saying that there is a high level of ignorance among the populace as regards rights, first as human then as citizens of Nigeria.
In line with this, I intend to carry out a project in my campus (under the umbrella of my Students Chambers wherein I am an Executive member) geared towards getting my fellow students acquainted with their Fundamental Human Rights, particularly the rights to dignity of human person, right to liberty and right to fair hearing as in Sections 34, 35 and 36 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
This project will involve faculty-to-faculty symposia, webinars, campaigns within the campus and its environs, a moot/ mock competition tailored to address the subject matter of the protection of the aforementioned rights; and a well organized conference which will feature Humans Rights Lawyers and Activists who will further enlighten students on the realities of human rights advocacy in Nigeria.
This will be carried out through my student chamber in collaboration with other student chambers in my faculty. We will also collaborate with the Directorate of Student Right on my campus and the Students’ Union Government and organizations on my campus.
