" "There is no health without mental health" -Vikram Patel. I like this quote because it's simple and shows the importance of mental health in the overall health of an individual. By being part of the Millennium Fellowship, I will be able to attain skills needed to carry out my project, and utilize the resources available to ensure that there is a safer space for mental health issues. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Imara Afya

Imara Afya is a social project that aims to positively impact the mental health field within Kenya by using the skills that medical students and staff employ to improve this area in Kenya. WHO defines health as ‘A state of complete physical, mental and social, well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ In Kenya, our physical health care has advanced greatly but there is still plenty of room for improvement in mental health and care. Given the fact that mental health is still a big taboo that is either not taken seriously, or not talked about at all, there is still a long way to go in this aspect. Therefore, through this project, we want to decrease the stigma and improve access to suitable and affordable health care so that regular Kenyans, within Nairobi and eventually to rural areas, can view mental health as something that is affordable and something that someone can recover from easily. With this project, I believe that the overall health care within Kenya will be better in terms of wholistic access to treatment and through this we will be one step closer towards catching up on a global scale when it comes to health care.
