Millennium Fellowship Project: Social Impact at the University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi's Millennium Fellowship cohort joined various SACCOs and Micro-Finance Institutions during this year's Savings week. As part of our Social Impact tour, we explored ways for these institutions partnering with us in advancing the SDGs. The event that took place at the Wakulima Market attracted many small-scale traders. We talked about how how the SACCO movement can support Young people by creating internships and offering decent work and economic growth for the entire society. On their part, the SACCOs shared the strategies they are using to end Poverty, alleviate hunger, and build sustainable cities and communities through their products.

About the Millennium Fellow

James Kamau Ndung'u is an intelligent, humble and a passionate Electrical and Information Engineering student at the University of Nairobi. He was born in Kakamega, Kenya and is currently studying in Nairobi, Kenya; with the hopes of getting an opportunity to study abroad in USA or Japan.
James has always been passionate about giving back to the community. In high-school, he was the secretary to the Social Welfare Society. The leadership skills he gained from there have propelled him and other friends to come up with Smile Charities Kenya. From the name, it's aim is to put smiles on people's faces through charity, be it buying them food, paying school fees for some Children and visiting different homes. They have managed to successfully organise giving food to the street children twice, visited eight Children Homes and paid school fees for two children. James hopes to impact 100000 people by the end of this year by putting a smile on their faces. So far, he has reached about 43000 people.
Apart from charity, James also teaches Sunday School, helping to mould children in the different aspects of life.
