Millennium Fellowship Project: Twende Shule Initiative

Twende Shule Initiative (TSI) is a Group Project initiated by the Millennium Fellowship Class of 2022 Fellows from the University of Nairobi CAE Cohort.

It is geared towards ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all and in turn achieve SDG 4 – Quality Education.

Due to the onset of the Free Primary Education Programme, 2003, public schools faced an unprecedented surge in enrolment numbers and thus overwhelming the current infrastructural facilities in these schools with a certain school having only four latrines serving over 600 pupils.

The project therefore strives to have built and upgraded education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, non-violent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all.

Our aim to raise awareness through advocating for these reforms on the various social media platforms. We will engage with the public on these platforms, educated and share ideas, that will have the sole purpose of advancing this goal. We are aiming to gather a following of about a 500 people across all platforms during the Millenium Fellowship Period (August-December 2022).
We also aim to partner with the relevant stakeholders: National Government, Foundations and School Heads(Administration) to ensure that students and faculty altogether are able to access basic services: electricity, internet, computers, adapted infrastructure and materials for students with disabilities, basic drinking water, single-sex basic sanitation facilities and basic hand washing facilities.

Our main target are schools in marginalized poverty stricken areas. However, we are currently working to ensure public schools in our University’s vicinity have met the conditions. By 2025 we look forward to having a achieved at least 80% of the set goals.
