Millennium Fellowship Project: Beyond the Binary
On campus and within my own friend circle, I have noticed people make casual stereotypical remarks and brush them off as a joke when they are confronted about it. Many even make homophobic- and queer-phobic remarks. This is but one of the reasons why transgender people may not feel like my campus is a safe space for them. Through this project, I want to assess the various reasons which lead to the underrepresentation of transgender students in schools and in my own campus as well, and bring such reasons to light in order to hopefully make my campus a safe space. I strongly believe that SDG 5 must look beyond the gender binary. Hence, I will base my project on spreading awareness, as one of the best ways to combat stigma is through education. I will conduct interviews with noted transgender people who are successful in their respective fields today, as well as with faculty members of schools in Bhubaneswar and of XIM University to hear their opinions on the matter. My assessment will be compiled in the form of a report, which I hope to use in the future to promote change in existing systems and make schools and universities a place where transgender students can study without having to face stigma and discrimination.
About the Millennium Fellow
Aadya Tyagi is an amicable young woman who is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in Sustainable Development at the School of Sustainability, XIM University. Brought up in Gurgaon, she is currently based out of Bhubaneswar, Odisha where she is learning to cultivate her thoughts along the lines of socio-economic upliftment, climate resilience, capacity-building, and gender equality. Throughout her lifetime she has been a strong advocate for gender equality and strongly believes true equality cannot be achieved without including people of all genders. Aadya aspires to thrive and pursue her goals in an equitable society, starting by bringing about a change in her campus through the Millennium Fellowship.
