Millennium Fellowship Project: Chaaya (छाया): Promoting Mental Wellness via Comics

Project 'Chaaya' aims to combat prevailing mental health challenges like lack of adequate knowledge about mental health and mental healthcare practices, increased suicides, and social isolation in India. It envisions a society where mental health is as openly discussed as physical health, and seeking help for mental wellness is not stigmatised but encouraged. It aims to do so through digitalized comics—a medium that is easily sharable and transcends linguistic and cultural barriers.

About the Millennium Fellow

Shrradaa Ramesh, a third-year undergraduate psychology major and visual arts and performing arts minor at Ashoka University, India, is a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and accessibility. She is a Millennium Fellow of the Class of 2023, working on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Motivated by personal experiences witnessing the tragic consequences of untreated mental health disorders within her country, Shrradaa initiated the project 'Chaaya' to combat the stigma surrounding mental health and promote well-being. With a 'feel, imagine, do, share' approach and an unwavering 'I can, we can, you can' attitude, she endeavours to make a transformative impact on individuals and communities alike.

Through project 'Chaaya', Shrradaa employs the power of digitalized comics to disseminate knowledge about mental health in an accessible and engaging manner. Recognising comics as a universally beloved medium transcending linguistic and cultural barriers, she aims to use the medium to advocate for good mental health care practices. Her goal is to distribute these comics digitally on various platforms to institutions and individuals across the country, with the hope of preventing mental health crises and encouraging individuals to seek professional help for their well-being.
