Millennium Fellowship Project: Relationship between Local Family Economic Involvement in Rural Tourism and Migration Decisions of Youth

Through my MCN fellowship project, I investigated the fascinating interplay between local family economic involvement in rural tourism and the migration decisions of youth in Keikai Village, Guangdong Province, China.
In this project, I delved into Keikai Village, and through surveys and interviews with 48 respondents, two key factors emerged as my outcome. First, family economic situations are generally stable, with youth earning around 4,000 yuan per month. Second, family demographics, like the presence of children or elderly members in a family, impact whether youth work in nearby factories or migrate to cities. Unexpectedly, the influence of newcomers has reshaped the village's landscape, as they lead most tourism activities, squeezing villagers into other economic activities.
