Millennium Fellowship Project: Think Pink: Overcoming barriers in womens' access to healthcare

Think Pink is a community-based project that looks to raise health awareness for women of ethnic minority backgrounds and Muslims centred around women's cancers and basic life support. Research has shown that Muslim and ethnic minority women have lower rates of uptake for screening and consequently poorer healthcare outcomes. As a medical student, equity in healthcare and engagement is something that I am immensely passionate about so before starting I carried out an electronic survey throughout the community to understand the thoughts and experiences of women already regarding cancer care as well as desk research to understand the extent of the issue. I then proposed to create a curriculum which focused on different cancers that predominantly affect women (breast, ovarian, and other gynaecological cancers), ranging from their signs and symptoms, possible pathways of screening and ways to access help and support. We then used this to run workshops in different languages to teach these women and interviewed them to understand better what are the barriers that limit them from accessing and consequently engaging with healthcare. As well as the cancer portion of the curriculum, we also carried out basic life support techniques with a portion on paediatric life support. We chose a prominent local mosque to partner with as this is a trusted and comfortable environment for numerous women from this local area.
