" The Millennium Fellowship has enabled me to study a mental health course by WHO ( World Health Organization). This is very helpful to me as an advocate for mental health. Lastly, via my Millennium Fellowship project, I have been able to procure seventy-four ( 74) pieces of HIV/ AIDS self -test kits for my colleagues on campus specifically, Development Education Students. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Mental health advocacy and HIV/ AIDS

It aims at creating awareness on mental health among young people, so that the various barriers that have made it difficult to even talk about mental health will be nipped in bud. This comes in handy,as mental health issues in my community are attached to spiritual and Divine causes and this is a major stumbling block to the way we approach the mentally ill persons in the community and even the approach to treatment. As result of this,it denies the mentally ill quality of life and worse of it all their human rights. So this project seeks to create awareness among the community members so that we could normalize conversations about mental health and how affected individuals must be treated with respect as people and not burdens.

About the Millennium Fellow

Development Education studies is my program of study. GAFARU AMINU is my name , a student from University for Development Studies, Ghana, west Africa. I am passionate about gender issues, mental health issues and education. I therefore do anything within my possibility to advance SDG3, 4, 5. Because of my passion for positive change in my community, I have developed a high sense of responsibility towards humanity via volunteerism and empathy. My personal conviction is that, Development will suffer severely,if others are left out of the process.
