Millennium Fellowship Project: EcoPave Innovations

The project is known as EcoPave Innovations which was carried out in Kibera one of the biggest slums in Africa with a population of about 1 million registered people. This initiative was in line with SDG of ensuring Good health and wellbeing and Call to Climate Action.
EcoPave Innovations was formed to promote plastic recycling in the region of Kibera to make plastic pavers from it. This whole main idea was driven to solve problems related to plastic waste in the area such as contamination of water bodies since plastics are scattered all over, loss of soil fertility and deaths of animals which feed on plastics while zero grazing. Besides, these plastics have led to health related issues such as cholera, dysentery, malaria since they block water tunnels and act as breeding places. Therefore the initiative was formed as a beacon of home to put these plastics to use and ensure a friendly environment. The plastics are mixed with sand and limestone after people melted then put in shapers to make the pavers. Besides ensuring a clean Kibera, the initiative aims at creating employment to the youths there since poverty is another challenge the community is facing. As time goes on, the goal of this initiative is to ensure that out of plastic, Kibera is able to identify lasting solutions to communities areas to reduce health risks, reduce poverty, and support vulnerable people in the area to create a transformative Kibera refion
